Walnut’s stampede defense kept San Gabriel out of the end zone most of the night until the Mustang offense woke up and secured a hard fought 35-13 victory over the Matadors Friday night. Walnut fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter on a 65 yard fumble recovery by the San Gabriel defense and the score stayed that way through halftime. The Mustangs took the opening 2nd half kickoff and let Billy Von Goeben do the heavy lifting with several bruising runs into Matador territory. The drive was capped off with a Jared Arellano TD pass to sophomore Noah Davidson to tie the score at 7 all. San Gabriel got the ball back and was driving when Von Goeben stripped the ball from their QB and senior Jaxson Mcisaac picked up the fumble and returned it 64 yards for the go ahead score. Arellano, Von Goeben and Carlos Castellanos capped of the Walnut scoring with a rushing TD for each.
Walnut will have a bye next week and begin Hacienda League play at home against South Hills High School on September 28th.
