It took nine innings before Walnut Softball took the lead against Charter Oak Monday afternoon but once they did, the Mustangs held on to beat the Chargers 13-9. Walnut fell behind early 4-1, then 7-3 and finally 8-6 before tying the game in the 6th inning with a bases loaded walk to Ryann Bonilla and the tying single from Natalie Basurto. The game remained tied till the ninth when the Mustangs scored 5 to finally take the lead. Mustang bats were led by Rick Garay who had 4 hits, 2 RBI’s and scored 4 times, Bailey Rivas with 3 hits and a pair of RBI’s and Princess Matavao with 3 hits and also 2 RBI’s. Matavao and freshman second baseman Sophie Valle, were both outstanding in the middle infield with a combined 14 assists.
With the win, Walnut is now tied with Diamond Ranch for 3rd in league and the final guaranteed CIF playoff spot. Both teams will play each other on the final day of the regular season Wednesday at 3:15pm at Walnut High School. The winner will make CIF, while the loser will have to hope for an at-large bid.
